The popular British coastal town of Great Yarmouth is situated at the mouth of the River Yare (hence its name), it has a populace of about seventy thousand residents, it acts as a gateway between the Norfolk Broads and the coast. A fishing port for centuries and just recently it has helped support the various offshore oil rigs that exist off this coastline. Great Yarmouth has been fashionable as a coastal hotspot ever since seventeen fifty nine when seawater baths opened up near to the beachfront.

The town has realized a good liaison between its seafront, that runs for almost six kilometres, and its busy commercial port, which stretches along the River Yare for further than 3km, pretty much parallel to the coastline. The River Yare meanders over the flat land to the east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and after that increases out into the the huge Breydon Water, after which it heads quickly southwards, causing the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth is stationed.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The old settlement and port evolved on the east banks of the River Yare, it then expanded along the western banks into a vicinity which is puzzlingly named Southtown. Returning to the shoreline, Great Yarmouth has 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the celebrated Britannia Theatre together with a funfair, bars, tenpin bowling and amusement arcades. On Marine Parade you might spot the now run down Winter Gardens, built in steel and glass, many are praying that this building will get the six million or so needed to remodel it.

The Story of Great Yarmouth: There was without a doubt settlement in the Yarmouth region as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortress erected by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There was a permanent community there by the time of the Domesday Book. The community likely grew due to the superb fishing there and a sizeable amount of fishermen were amongst those mentioned in the Domesday Book, the total population at that time was roughly four hundred, all in the Gorleston manor.

King John it was who 1st granted Yarmouth a charter to hold a market (sometimes called the right of toll) in 1208, this charter at the same time stated that Yarmouth must be "a free borough forever". Some fifty years or so after Yarmouth was given leave to build town walls by King Henry 3rd, it was also permitted to build its very own prison or gaol, a great deal of both the prison and the wall still endure at present. Yarmouth grew as a shipbuilding centre and fishing port throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, though some conflict took place involving the men of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with lots of ships being sunk in the process. In thirteen forty eight the Black Death hit the town, and struck it in a harder way than it did virtually any other town in Britain, with over three quarters of the residents killed.

Between the wall and the river the dwellings were jammed together into in excess of 100 narrow lanes often called 'Rows', some not even 1 yard wide, several of these passageways can still be seen nowadays. An additional leftover from those long past days is the marvelous thirteenth century Tolhouse, certainly one of the nation's eldest municipal structures, below ground level it has dark dungeons. In the Middle Ages and thereafter, Yarmouth became wealthy due to the herring trade. The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, which happened each autumn, was undoubtedly one of the greatest of the trade fairs in the Middle Ages.

The heyday for the herring fishing was to arrive right before The First World War at which time in excess of one thousand herring drifters worked out of the town. A team of women (known as "fish girls") mostly from Scotland travelled to Yarmouth in autumn to help process the large volumes of herrings, said to have averaged in excess of 500 million fish over the prime years.
