The famous British coastal town of Great Yarmouth is situated where the River Yare enters the North Sea (hence the name), it has a populace of approximately 70,234 residents, it divides the Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for centuries and over the last few decades it has served the many offshore rigs that are positioned off this seacoast. The resort has accomplished a comfortable coexistence between its seafront, that extends for nearly 6 km, and its lively commercial harbor, which runs along the River Yare for more than 2 miles, just about parallel to the shore. The River Yare meanders over the flat land east of the city of Norwich, and broadens out into the massive Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly in a southerly direction, resulting in a peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original settlement and dock grew up on the east bank of the River Yare, it later continued to expand across the west banks into a vicinity which is bafflingly known as Southtown. Going back to the coast, the town has 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the famous Britannia Theatre together with a fairground, amusements, restaurants and tenpin bowling. King John it was who 1st awarded Yarmouth a charter to have a street market (sometimes called the right of toll) in 1208, the charter besides that announced that Yarmouth will be "a free borough forever". About 50 years after the town was permitted to construct town walls by King Henry III, it was in addition permitted to have a prison, a good deal of both the wall and the gaol survive even now. Yarmouth grew as a fishing town and port through the 13th and 14th centuries, while much fighting occured amongst the sailors of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with lots of ships destroyed at this time. In 1348 the Black Death arrived in Yarmouth, and hit it in a more severe way than virtually any city or town in England, with close to 70% of its population dead as a result.

Between the river and the wall the houses were actually squashed into in excess of a hundred constricted alleyways referred to as 'Rows', several not even one yard wide, a selection of of these lanes remain in existence today. Yet another leftover from those long past days is the tremendous 13th C Tolhouse, one of Britain's earliest public structures, below ground level it has sinister dungeons. Over the Dark Ages and afterward, Yarmouth (Great Yarmouth) grew in prosperity mainly from the herring industry. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, which took place in the autumn, was unquestionably one of the best of the trade fairs in medieval times.

The heyday of the herring trade took place just before The First World War when more than a thousand herring drifters operated out of Great Yarmouth.
