The bustling English holiday resort of Great Yarmouth sits at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of roughly 70,000 residents, and it acts as a portal between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for hundreds of years and in recent times it has served the various offshore rigs that exist off this coastline. It has been a renowned coastal resort ever since seventeen fifty nine when salt water baths were built by the beachfront.

The resort has reached a peaceful coexistence between its seafront, that extends for approximately 6 kilometres, and its lively commercial port, which stretches along the River Yare for further than three kilometers, essentially parallel to the seashore. The River Yare runs through the low-lying terrain to the east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and after that widens out into the the huge Breydon Water, after which it turns rapidly south, forming the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth stands.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The old settlement and port grew down the east banks of the River Yare, it afterward extended along the west banks into an area a touch puzzlingly named Southtown. On the the coast, Great Yarmouth boasts 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier features the renowned Britannia Theatre and a funfair, bars, tenpin bowling and amusements. Upon Marine Parade you will find the now unused Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, locals are hoping that this icon will get the six million or so needed to repair it.

The History of Great Yarmouth Norfolk: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth region as far back as the Roman era, with the Gariannonum fortress erected by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. Clearly there was a proper community there by the time of the Domesday Book (1086). The settlement probably developed as a result of the excellent fishing here and a large number of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the population back then was close to 400, all then in the Gorleston manor.

King John it was who 1st awarded Yarmouth the charter to hold a street market (also known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter furthermore proclaimed that it will be "a free borough forever". About 50 years later Yarmouth was given leave to erect a town wall by Henry the Third, it was also empowered to construct a prison or gaol, a good deal of both the walls and the prison endure to this day. Yarmouth grew as a port and fishing town over the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, while a certain amount of conflict occured amongst the fishermen of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a lot of ships destroyed along the way. In the 1340s the Black Death reached the town, and hit it in a more severe way than it did almost any town the country, with about seventy percent of its residents wiped out.

Between the river and the town walls the dwellings were jumbled together along in excess of 140 narrow alleys described as 'Rows', a few not even 1 yard in width, a number of them still exist today. One additional relic from those long past times is the superb 13th C Tolhouse, considered to be one of the nation's oldest public buildings, underground it has eerie dungeons. During the medieval period and thereafter, the area grew rich through the herring fishing trade. The Free Herring Fair, which was held at autumn time, was undoubtedly among the best of the trade fairs in the Middle Ages.

The best days of the herring industry was to arrive right before World War One when more than 1,100 herring boats worked out of the port. A band of girls (called "fish girls") lots from Scotland headed to the port every autumn time in order to process the huge quantities of fish, thought to average over 500 million fish in the prime years. The herring were described as "silver darlings" locally such was their respect for the fish.

The town can be accessed via the A47 or the A12, it's roughly 21 miles east of Norwich, 16 kilometers north of Lowestoft and 136 miles north-east of Central London. Yarmouth can also be reached by railway from Liverpool St, London and the handiest international airport is at Norwich a driving distance of twenty three miles.
