The celebrated British vacation resort of Great Yarmouth stands at the mouth of the River Yare (hence the name), it has a population of roughly seventy thousand residents, and it acts as a portal between the Norfolk Broads and the coast. A fishing port for generations and lately it has helped support the many offshore oil rigs that exist off this seacoast. Yarmouth has been a popular coastal resort since back in the late eighteenth century when saltwater baths were built by the seafront.

The resort has reached a comfortable coexistence between its large seafront, that runs for nearly 6 kilometres, and its busy commercial port, which extends along the River Yare for further than three kilometres, just about along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare passes over the flat low-lying fields east of Norwich, then expands out into the huge Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly southwards, producing a peninsula on which Great Yarmouth stands.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old community and port evolved down the east bank of the Yare, it later extended along the west bank into a district a touch bewilderingly termed Southtown. Going back to the coast, the town has two piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the well known Britannia Theatre and also a fairground, bowling, bars and amusements. Upon Marine Parade is the now run down Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, many are praying that this structure will receive the 6 million or so needed to repair it.

Great Yarmouth's Historic Past: There was undoubtedly human settlement in the Great Yarmouth district as long ago as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum camp built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There was clearly a permanent village in Yarmouth by the time of the Domesday Book. The community surely evolved due to the superb fishing here and a sizeable amount of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the population at this time was around 400, all at that time belonging to the manor of Gorleston.

It was King John who first granted Yarmouth a charter to hold a weekly market (generally known as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter furthermore proclaimed that the town should be "a free borough forever". Half a century after Yarmouth was authorized to build town walls by King Henry the Third, it was in addition allowed to construct its own prison, a good deal of both the gaol and the walls survive in modern day Great Yarmouth. Yarmouth grew as a port and fishing town during the 13th and 14th centuries, although much combat occured involving the sailors of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with numerous boats lost during these conflicts. In thirteen forty eight the Black Death struck the town, and struck it in a harsher way than virtually any other city or town the country, with roughly seventy percent of the townspeople wiped out.

In between the town walls and the river the houses had been packed together along in excess of 140 constricted streets typically called 'Rows', a few not even 1 yard in width, a small number remain in existence nowadays. One other relic from those long past periods is the outstanding 13th century Tolhouse, among the nation's eldest municipal buildings, underground it boasts sinister dungeons. Through the Middle Ages and after, the town became successful mostly from the herring fishing trade. The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, that was held in the autumn, was certainly one of the best of the trade fairs in medieval times.

The best days of the herring fishing occurred in the time before World War 1 when in excess of 1 thousand one hundred herring drifters worked out of the port. A crowd of women (referred to as "fish girls") the majority from Scotland alighted in the town in autumn working to process the huge quantities of fish, thought to average in excess of 500 million fish over the prime years. The herring were referred to as "silver darlings" by the locals such was their admiration for them.
