The celebrated English coast town of Great Yarmouth stands at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of around seventy thousand inhabitants, and it acts as a portal between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for generations and recently it has served the various offshore oil rigs that can be found in the area. Yarmouth has been a much visited seaside resort ever since seventeen fifty nine when sea baths were built by the beach.

GreatYarmouth has achieved a relaxed liaison between its large seafront, that runs for nearly 6 kilometres, and its vibrant commercial harbor, which runs along the bank of the River Yare over 3 kilometres, pretty much parallel to the coastline. The River Yare passes across the low-lying fields to the east of the city of Norwich, then widens out into the expanse of Breydon Water, then turning sharply southwards, making a peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original settlement and dock grew on the eastern bank of the Yare, it then expanded along the west bank into an area a touch bewilderingly called Southtown. Going back to the coast, Great Yarmouth boasts two piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the celebrated Britannia Theatre plus a funfair, taverns, bowling and amusements. On Marine Parade is the now derelict Winter Gardens, built of glass and steel, locals are praying that this building will get the 6 million or so needed to remodel it.

The Historical Past of Great Yarmouth: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth region as long ago as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortification built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. Clearly there was a proper village there when the Domesday Book (1086) was compiled. The village probably grew due to the exceptional fishing there and a large amount of fishermen were among those specified in the Domesday Book, the population at this time was around four hundred, all then in the manor of Gorleston.

It was King John who 1st issued Yarmouth the charter to have a street market (referred to as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter at the same time declared that the town should be "a free borough forever". Fifty three years after this the town was given leave to construct town walls by King Henry 3rd, it was furthermore authorized to construct a gaol, a lot of both the walls and the gaol still remain at present. Yarmouth grew as a fishing town and port through the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, although a certain amount of conflict took place involving the ships of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a lot of boats lost in the process. In thirteen forty eight the Black Death arrived in the town, and struck it in a more destructive way than it did pretty much any community in Great Britain, with close to 70% of its residents wiped out.

Between the walls and the river the houses were actually crowded along in excess of a hundred constricted alleys also known as 'Rows', a few just 1 yard across, several survive to this day. Another legacy from those ancient times is the amazing 13th C Tolhouse, one of England's most ancient municipal structures, below ground level it has spooky dungeons. Through the Dark Ages and afterward, the area grew rich mainly from the herring trade. The Free Herring Fair, that happened at autumn time, was actually one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The halcyon days of the herring industry was just before The First World War when above 1,000 herring fishing boats worked out of Yarmouth. A team of girls (called "fish girls") lots from Scotland arrived in Yarmouth every autumn time working to process the enormous amounts of fish, thought to average in excess of 500 million fish in the glory years. The herring were generally known as "silver darlings" by local people such was their respect for them.

The town can be got to using the A47 and the A12, it's approximately twenty one miles east of Norwich, ten miles to the north of Lowestoft and 136 miles north-east of London. Yarmouth can be reached by train from London, Liverpool St and the most handy international airport is at Norwich a drive of 37 kilometers.
