A fishing port for hundreds of years and over the last few decades it has helped support the a large number of offshore rigs that can be found in the area. Yarmouth has been a much loved coastal resort since back in the 1760s when sea baths became available near to the seafront.

The town has accomplished a good liaison between its ample seafront, which runs for nearly 6km, and its vibrant commercial harbor, which stretches along the bank of the River Yare over three kilometres, roughly along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare runs over the flat land to the east of Norwich, and after that stretches out into the massive Breydon Water, then turning rapidly in a southerly direction, making the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth lies.

Some fifty years or so later the town was given consent to build town walls by King Henry the 3rd, it was also allowed to construct its own gaol, a great deal of both the walls and the prison survive in modern day Great Yarmouth. Yarmouth grew as a port and fishing town throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, while a certain amount of conflict occured between the sailors of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a lot of boats destroyed at this time. In the late 1340s the Black Death broke out in Yarmouth, and struck it in a more severe way than it did practically any other settlement the country, with around three quarters of the inhabitants exterminated.

In between the river and the walls the buildings were actually packed together into over one hundred narrow lanes termed 'Rows', some not even one yard across, a small number survive today. Another relic from those early times is the marvelous 13th C Tolhouse, one of England's earliest municipal buildings, underground it boasts sinister dungeons.
