The bustling English seaside town of Great Yarmouth lies at the mouth of the River Yare (hence the name), it has a populace of roughly 70,000 people, and it sits between the Broads and the coast. A fishing port for centuries and most recently it has served the many offshore oil rigs that are located off this coastline. Yarmouth has been a much loved seaside holiday resort ever since 1759 when salt water baths were erected beside the beach.

The town has achieved a good alliance between its seafront, that spreads for nearly 6 kilometres, and its lively commercial harbor, which runs alongside the River Yare for more than 3 kilometres, almost parallel to the coast. The River Yare passes over the flat ground to the east of the city of Norwich, and after that increases out into the huge Breydon Water, after which it curves rapidly in a southerly direction, shaping the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth lies.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original town and harbour developed down the east banks of the Yare, it later extended down the western banks into a district a little confusingly named Southtown. Returning to the seashore, the town has two piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier hosts the celebrated Britannia Theatre together with a fair, bowling alley, amusement arcades and bars. Upon Marine Parade you will find the now derelict Winter Gardens, built in glass and steel, locals are hoping that this structure will receive the six million or so needed to remodel it.

Half a century after this the town was given authorization to construct a town wall by Henry 3rd, it was likewise able to construct its very own prison or gaol, some of both the prison and the walls still remain in Great Yarmouth today. Yarmouth grew as a shipbuilding centre and fishing port over the 13th and 14th centuries, although a certain amount of conflict occured amongst the fishermen of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with lots of ships lost at this time. In 1348 the Black Death broke out in the town, and struck it in a more severe way than it did literally any other town in Britain, with close to seventy percent of its population annihilated.

In between the river and the walls the dwellings were compressed together along in excess of one hundred and forty narrow streets named 'Rows', some less than one yard wide, a number of them still exist today. An additional legacy from those early days is the wonderful 13th C Tolhouse, among the country's oldest municipal buildings, below ground level it houses menacing dungeons. Through the medieval period and afterward, Great Yarmouth became wealthy primarily from the herring trade. The peak period for the herring industry transpired prior to WW1 at which time above a thousand herring boats worked out of the port.
