The famous English holiday resort of Great Yarmouth sits where the River Yare enters the North Sea (hence the name), it has a populace of about 70,234 inhabitants, and is situated between the Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for 100's of years and just recently it has served the many offshore rigs that can be found in the area. Yarmouth has been a renowned coastal holiday resort since back in the 1760s when seawater baths became available beside the seafront.

The town has realized a good coexistence between its spacious seafront, that spreads for nearly 6km, and its busy commercial port, which stretches along the River Yare for further than 2 miles, virtually along the same line as the coast. The River Yare runs through the flat low-lying ground to the east of the city of Norwich, after which it widens out into the the extensive Breydon Water, after which it curves rapidly south, producing the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth is based.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original settlement and dock grew up on the east banks of the Yare, it after that expanded down the western banks into a vicinity quite puzzlingly known as Southtown. Returning to the seashore, the town has 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the well known Britannia Theatre plus a funfair, tenpin bowling, amusements and pubs. On Marine Parade you will find the now derelict Winter Gardens, built in glass and steel, many are praying that this icon will get the six million or so that will be required restore it.

The History of Great Yarmouth: There was settlement in the Yarmouth district way back in Roman times, with the Gariannonum fortress built by the Romans near the spot that the Yare flows into the sea. There was clearly a well established community in Yarmouth at the time the Domesday Book was compiled. The community in all probability evolved due to the first rate fishing there and a significant amount of fishermen were certainly amongst those mentioned in the Domesday Book, the population back then was close to 400, all then in the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who first granted Yarmouth a charter to have a market (sometimes called the right of toll) in 1208, this charter at the same time declared that Yarmouth should be "a free borough forever". About 50 years later the town was permitted to construct a town wall by Henry the 3rd, it was furthermore entitled to build a gaol, a fair amount of both the gaol and the wall survive even today. Yarmouth grew as a shipbuilding centre and fishing port during the 13th and 14th centuries, whilst plenty of conflict occured involving the ships of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a lot of ships destroyed at this time. In the late 1340s the Black Death arrived in Yarmouth, and hit it in a more substantial way than virtually any town or city in Britain, with over three quarters of its residents exterminated.

In between the wall and the river the dwellings became packed along over a hundred narrow passages described as 'Rows', a few just one yard in width, a number of these still exist to this day. A further leftover from those long past periods is the terrific 13th C Tolhouse, among Britain's oldest municipal structures, below ground level it houses creepy dungeons. During the Dark Ages and after, Great Yarmouth prospered due to the herring fishing industry. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, that took place every autumn, was without doubt one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The glory days for the herring industry transpired in the period before WW1 when over a thousand herring drifters worked out of Yarmouth. A large number of women (named "fish girls") a large number from Scotland went to the port every autumn time working to process the enormous volumes of herrings, said to average in excess of five hundred million fish during the best years.
