The bustling British vacation town of Great Yarmouth stands at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of roughly 70,000 inhabitants, and it sits between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for generations and just recently it has helped support the various offshore rigs that exist off this coastline. Great Yarmouth has been prominent as a coastal resort since the late 18th century when sea water baths were built next to the beach.

GreatYarmouth has attained a good rapport between its seafront, which runs for nearly six kilometres, and its vibrant commercial harbour, which runs along the bank of the River Yare over 3km, just about parallel to the shore. The River Yare runs over the flat ground to the east of Norwich, and widens out into the huge Breydon Water, and then turns quickly in a southerly direction, creating a peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old settlement and port grew up along the east banks of the River Yare, it subsequently continued to expand across the western banks into an area rather confusingly named Southtown. Returning to the seashore, the town has 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the well known Britannia Theatre and a funfair, bowling, amusements and pubs. On Marine Parade you may spot the now run down Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, residents are praying that this structure will receive the 6 million or so necessary to repair it.

Historic past of Great Yarmouth: There was settlement in the Yarmouth area as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortress built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There was an established community there at the time the Domesday Book (1086) was compiled. The village undoubtedly developed as a result of the fine fishing there and a appreciable amount of fishermen were certainly among those listed in the Domesday Book, the total population at this time was around 400, all at that time within the Gorleston manor.

King John it was who 1st granted Yarmouth the charter to hold a street market (described as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter on top of that declared that it would be "a free borough forever". About 50 years after this Yarmouth was permitted to construct a town wall by King Henry the Third, it was moreover permitted to build a prison or gaol, a fair amount of both the walls and the prison remain even today. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and shipbuilding centre over the 13th and 14th centuries, while much conflict took place involving the fishermen of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a considerable quantity of ships lost in the process. In the 1340s the Black Death broke out in Yarmouth, and hit it in a harder way than virtually any community the country, with about 70% of the people annihilated.

Between the river and the wall the houses had been crowded along over 100 constricted streets called 'Rows', several a slender 3 feet across, a certain amount of of them survive to this day. One additional leftover from those early times is the tremendous 13th C Tolhouse, one of the nation's most ancient public buildings, underground it has menacing dungeons. Through the Middle Ages and thereafter, the area grew rich through the fishing industry. The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, which happened in the autumn, was undoubtedly one of the greatest of the trade fairs in the Middle Ages.

The peak period for the herring industry was to arrive prior to WW1 when over eleven hundred herring drifters worked out of Great Yarmouth. A group of girls (named "fish girls") many from Scotland travelled to the town in autumn time working to process the endless amounts of herring, reputed to have averaged over five hundred million fish during the prime years.
