The renowned British holiday resort of Great Yarmouth sits at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of approximately 70,234 residents, and it segregates the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for centuries and most recently it has helped support the many offshore oil rigs that are located off this shore. It has been popular as a coastal hotspot ever since the late 1750s when sea baths were erected by the beach.

The resort has achieved a relaxed coexistence between its seafront, that runs for nearly 6km, and its busy commercial port, which stretches alongside the River Yare for more than 3 kilometers, essentially along the same line as the shore. The River Yare passes across the flat low-lying land to the east of Norwich, and stretches out into the the sizeable Breydon Water, after which it moves quickly south, forming a peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth lies.

The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, that was held in the autumn, was clearly one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The best days of the herring fishing was right before WW1 at which time over one thousand one hundred herring boats worked out of the port.
