The busy UK sea side resort of Great Yarmouth lies at the mouth of the River Yare (hence its name), it has a population of roughly 70,000 people, and it separates the Broads and the sea. A fishing port for many years and recently it has helped support the various offshore oil rigs that exist off this coastline. Great Yarmouth has been famous as a coastal resort ever since the late eighteenth century when sea water baths were built close to the seafront.

GreatYarmouth has realized a relaxed coexistence between its spacious seafront, that runs for around 6 kilometres, and its lively commercial harbor, which stretches along the River Yare over 3 kilometers, virtually along the same line as the shore. The River Yare meanders across the low-lying ground east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, then widens out into the massive Breydon Water, then turning quickly southwards, making a peninsula on which Great Yarmouth is set.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old town and dock grew up down the eastern bank of the Yare, it consequently extended down the west bank into a district which is puzzlingly termed Southtown. On the the shoreline, the town boasts two piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the celebrated Britannia Theatre in addition to a fairground, bars, amusement arcades and bowling. Upon Marine Parade is the now unused Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, many are hoping that this structure will receive the 6 million or so that will be needed remodel it.

Great Yarmouth's History: There was certainly human activity in the Yarmouth area way back in Roman times, with the Gariannonum fortress built by the Romans near where the Yare flows into the sea. There existed a well established community there by the time of the Domesday Book (1086). The community probably evolved as a result of the good fishing there and a appreciable amount of fishermen were among those specified in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants back then was around 400, all then in the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st issued Yarmouth a charter to have a market (best known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter at the same time declared that Yarmouth would be "a free borough forever". Half a century after this the town was given leave to construct town walls by Henry III, it was in addition permitted to have its own gaol, a fair amount of both the prison and the wall remain even today. Yarmouth grew as a shipbuilding centre and fishing port throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, however a certain amount of conflict took place between the sailors of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with lots of boats lost during these conflicts. In the 1340s the Black Death arrived in the town, and struck it in a more severe way than it did practically any settlement in Great Britain, with around 70% of the population annihilated.

Between the river and the town walls the dwellings were crowded along over one hundred constricted streets named 'Rows', several a mere 3 feet in width, a selection of still exist nowadays. One other survivor from those early times is the superb thirteenth century Tolhouse, certainly one of the nation's most ancient public structures, underground there are scary dungeons. Throughout the Middle Ages and after, the area grew in affluence primarily from the herring fishing industry. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, that happened in the autumn, was clearly one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those ancient times.

The heyday for the herring trade happened prior to World War 1 when more than 1,000 herring fishing boats worked out of the harbour. A large number of women (described as "fish girls") many from Scotland alighted in the port each autumn to help process the endless numbers of herrings, believed to have averaged in excess of five hundred million fish over the glory years. The herring were called "silver darlings" by the locals such was their respect for the fish.
