The favorite Norfolk coast town of Great Yarmouth lies at the mouth of the River Yare (hence the name), it has a population of about seventy thousand people, it segregates the Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for generations and over the last few decades it has helped support the various offshore rigs that can be found in the area. Yarmouth has been renowned as a coastal resort since the late 18th century when sea water baths opened up near to the beachfront.

The town has achieved a relaxed rapport between its ample seafront, that extends for nearly four miles, and its lively commercial harbour, which stretches along the banks of the River Yare over three kilometres, more or less along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare meanders across the low-lying fields to the east of the city of Norwich, after which it stretches out into the expanse of Breydon Water, after which it moves sharply southwards, producing the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original town and dock grew along the east bank of the Yare, it afterward extended down the west banks into a district which is bewilderingly called Southtown. Going back to the coast, the town has 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier features the renowned Britannia Theatre plus a fairground, amusement arcades, bowling and bars. On Marine Parade you can spot the now unused Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, residents are praying that this structure will get the 6 million or so needed to restore it.

Heritage of Great Yarmouth: There was certainly human settlement in the Yarmouth district as early as the Roman era, with the Gariannonum fortress constructed by the Romans near the place that the Yare flows into the sea. There was clearly a proper village in Yarmouth at the time the 1086 Domesday Book was compiled. The settlement most probably developed as a consequence of the good fishing there and a substantial amount of fishermen were among those listed in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants at this time was close to four hundred, all at that time belonging to the manor of Gorleston.

King John it was who 1st awarded Yarmouth the charter to hold a market (also known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter also stated that Yarmouth must be "a free borough forever". Half a century after the town was authorized to erect a town wall by King Henry III, it was in addition able to have its own prison, a good deal of both the wall and the prison exist even now. Yarmouth grew as a port and fishing town through the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, while plenty of conflict occured involving the fishermen of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a number of ships being sunk in the process. In the late 1340s the Black Death found its way to the town, and hit it in a harder way than it did virtually any city or town in Britain, with close to seventy percent of the residents dead as a result.

In between the river and the town wall the buildings became compressed together along over a hundred narrow lanes described as 'Rows', a few not even one yard wide, quite a few of them remain in existence nowadays. A further legacy from those early days is the marvelous thirteenth century Tolhouse, one of England's eldest municipal buildings, below ground level it boasts creepy dungeons. Throughout the medieval period and thereafter, Yarmouth grew rich largely from the fishing industry. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, which was held in the autumn, was one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those historic days.

The peak period for the herring trade was right before WW1 when more than 1,000 herring boats operated out of the port. A crowd of women (known as "fish girls") many from Scotland went to Yarmouth in autumn time in order to process the endless numbers of herrings, said to have averaged over 500 million fish over the best years. The herring were termed "silver darlings" locally such was their respect for the fish.
