The favourite British coastal resort of Great Yarmouth lies where the River Yare enters the sea (hence its name), it has a populace of around 70,000 residents, and it is based between the Norfolk Broads and the sea. A fishing port for generations and just recently it has helped support the various offshore oil rigs that exist off this shoreline. Great Yarmouth has been renowned as a coastal vacation resort since back in the 1760s when sea baths were erected on the seafront.

The resort has reached a comfortable coexistence between its large seafront, that extends for roughly six kilometres, and its lively commercial port, which extends along the River Yare for more than 3 km, roughly along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare meanders across the flat terrain to the east of Norwich, and then stretches out into the the extensive Breydon Water, then turning quickly south, shaping a peninsula on which Great Yarmouth is established.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original settlement and harbour grew on the eastern banks of the River Yare, it after that continued to expand down the western bank into an area which is puzzlingly termed Southtown. On the the seashore, the town has two piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the famed Britannia Theatre along with a fairground, amusement arcades, tenpin bowling and pubs. Upon Marine Parade you will find the now run down Winter Gardens, built in steel and glass, many are hoping that this building will receive the 6 million or so needed to repair it.

Great Yarmouth's Historical Past: There was settlement in the Great Yarmouth region as long ago as Roman times, with the Gariannonum fort constructed by the Romans close to where the River Yare flows into the sea. There was an established village there by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. The community perhaps grew as a result of the fine fishing there and a substantial number of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the total population at this time was around four hundred, all within the manor of Gorleston.

King John it was who 1st awarded Yarmouth a charter to hold a street market (referred to as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter also stated that it will be "a free borough forever". 50 years or so after this Yarmouth was authorized to build a town wall by Henry 3rd, it was furthermore authorized to build its own prison, a fair amount of both the gaol and the wall still survive today. Yarmouth grew as a harbour and fishing port during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, though some combat took place involving the sailors of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a great quantity of ships destroyed in the conflict. In the 1340s the Black Death reached the town, and struck it in a more significant way than virtually any other settlement the country, with around seventy percent of its townspeople perishing.

Between the river and the town wall the houses were squashed along more than one hundred constricted alleys referred to as 'Rows', several only one yard wide, a number of can still be seen today. Yet another leftover from those long past times is the fantastic 13th century Tolhouse, considered to be one of the nation's earliest municipal structures, below ground level it houses scary dungeons. Throughout the Dark Ages and afterward, the area grew rich as a result of herring fishing industry. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, that happened each autumn, was clearly one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those ancient days.

The halcyon days of the herring trade transpired prior to World War One when more than a thousand herring drifters worked out of the port. A crowd of girls (called "fish girls") many from Scotland travelled to the port every autumn in order to process the massive volumes of herrings, thought to average in excess of 500 million fish in the prime years.
