The busy British holiday resort of Great Yarmouth stands at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of around 70,000 inhabitants, and it stands between the Broads and the coast. A fishing port for generations and over the last few decades it has helped support the many offshore rigs that can be found in the area. Great Yarmouth has been popular as a coastal hotspot since the late eighteenth century when seawater baths became available at the seafront.

GreatYarmouth has reached a good coexistence between its seafront, which extends for nearly six kilometres, and its lively commercial harbor, which extends alongside the River Yare for more than 3 km, pretty much along the same line as the seashore. The River Yare meanders across the low-lying terrain east of the city of Norwich, and then broadens out into the the much wider Breydon Water, then turning rapidly in a southerly direction, shaping a peninsula on which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old settlement and dock grew up on the east bank of the River Yare, it consequently spread down the western banks into an area quite bafflingly known as Southtown. Going back to the seashore, the town boasts two piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier hosts the celebrated Britannia Theatre along with a fair, bowling alley, amusement arcades and pubs. Upon Marine Parade is the now unused Winter Gardens, built in glass and steel, locals are praying that this building will get the 6 million or so required to remodel it.

Historical Background of Great Yarmouth: There was human activity in the Yarmouth district as far back as Roman times, with the Gariannonum fortress built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There was clearly a well established village in Yarmouth by the time of the Domesday Book (1086). The village perhaps developed due to the exceptional fishing here and a large number of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants at that time was close to 400, all at that time in the Gorleston manor.

King John it was who first granted Yarmouth the charter to have a street market (often known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter also proclaimed that Yarmouth must be "a free borough forever". Half a century after Yarmouth was allowed to construct a town wall by Henry the 3rd, it was also able to construct a prison or gaol, a fair amount of both the walls and the gaol still remain at this time. Yarmouth grew as a fishing town and port throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, whilst much fighting took place between the sailors of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a number of ships destroyed in the conflict. In 1348 the Black Death hit Yarmouth, and hit it in a harder way than it did pretty much any town or city in Britain, with approximately three quarters of the residents dying.

Between the walls and the river the buildings were actually jumbled into over one hundred narrow streets named 'Rows', some as narrow as just three feet in width, a number of still exist to this day. Another survivor from those age-old days is the marvelous 13th century Tolhouse, among the country's eldest municipal structures, below ground level it has scary dungeons. Throughout the medieval period and afterward, the area grew rich as a result of fishing trade. The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, that was held each autumn, was one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The halcyon days for the herring industry was to arrive right before WW1 at which time above eleven hundred herring drifters worked out of the harbour. A large number of women (named "fish girls") mostly from Scotland alighted in Yarmouth every autumn working to process the huge quantities of herrings, thought to average over five hundred million fish over the best years. The herring were called "silver darlings" by the locals such was the regard for them.
