The much loved Norfolk sea side resort of Great Yarmouth is located where the River Yare enters the North Sea (hence its name), it has a populace of approximately 70,000 inhabitants, and stands between the Norfolk Broads and the coast. A fishing port for generations and just lately it has served the a large number of offshore oil rigs that exist off this coastline. It has been a favourite seaside resort since the 1760s when salt water baths became available next to the beachfront.

The resort has realized a comfortable coexistence between its huge seafront, that runs for about 6 km, and its busy commercial harbour, which extends along the River Yare over two miles, pretty much along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare meanders through the flat low-lying fields east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and then expands out into the huge Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly southwards, producing a peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth lies.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original town and port grew up down the eastern bank of the river, it consequently continued to expand along the western bank into an area somewhat bewilderingly called Southtown. Returning to the coast, the town boasts 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier features the renowned Britannia Theatre together with a fair, restaurants, amusements and bowling alley. Upon Marine Parade is the now unused Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, residents are praying that this building will get the six million or so needed to remodel it.

The Historical Past of Great Yarmouth: There was settlement in the Yarmouth area as far back as Roman times, with the Gariannonum fort camp erected by the Romans close to the location where the River Yare flows into the North Sea. There existed a permanent settlement in Yarmouth at the time the Domesday Book (1086) was compiled. The village quite likely grew due to the excellent fishing here and a considerable amount of fishermen were amongst those specified in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants at this time was close to 400, all at that time within the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st granted Yarmouth a charter to hold a street market (also called the right of toll) in 1208, this charter moreover announced that the town should be "a free borough forever". Some fifty years or so after this the town was given leave to construct town walls by King Henry III, it was in addition permitted to construct its very own gaol or prison, parts of both the gaol and the walls still exist at present. Yarmouth grew as a port and fishing town throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, whilst plenty of fighting occured amongst the ships of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a considerable amount of boats being sunk in the conflict. In the late 1340s the Black Death reached the town, and hit it in a more substantial way than it did pretty much any community in Britain, with about seventy percent of its people dead as a result.

Between the town walls and the river the dwellings became jammed along in excess of one hundred constricted alleyways also known as 'Rows', several only three feet in width, a number of can still be seen to this day. One more legacy from those historical periods is the fantastic 13th century Tolhouse, considered to be one of the country's most ancient municipal buildings, below ground level it boasts forbidding dungeons. During the Middle Ages and thereafter, the area became affluent through the fishing trade. The Free Herring Fair, which happened every autumn time, was actually one of the best of the trade fairs in those ancient days.

The best days of the herring industry was to arrive prior to WW1 at which time over 1,000 herring drifters worked out of the port. A band of women (named "fish girls") mainly from Scotland headed to Great Yarmouth every autumn working to process the large quantities of herrings, believed to have averaged more than 500 million fish over the best years.
