The busy Norfolk seaside resort of Great Yarmouth sits at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of roughly seventy thousand people, it acts as a portal between the Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for hundreds of years and recently it has served the a large number of offshore oil rigs that are found off this shoreline. Yarmouth has been a well known seaside resort ever since the late 18th century when sea water baths were built beside the beachfront.

The resort has reached a good coexistence between its seafront, that runs for nearly four miles, and its bustling commercial harbour, which stretches alongside the River Yare over 3 km, pretty much along the same line as the shore. The River Yare meanders over the flat low-lying ground east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and after that widens out into the the substantial Breydon Water, then turning sharply in a southerly direction, resulting in the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original town and harbour grew up along the east bank of the Yare, it then extended down the western bank into an area a little confusingly called Southtown. Returning to the shoreline, the town has two piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the well known Britannia Theatre along with a fair, bowling alley, amusements and bars. Upon Marine Parade you may spot the now derelict Winter Gardens, built of glass and steel, residents are praying that this building will receive the six million or so needed to repair it.

The Story of Great Yarmouth Norfolk: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth region as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortress constructed by the Romans close to the spot that the Yare flows into the North Sea. There was a well established village in Yarmouth at the time the Domesday Book (1086) was compiled. The village surely developed due to the terrific fishing there and a appreciable number of fishermen were among those listed in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants back then was approximately 400, all then in the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st granted Yarmouth a charter to hold a market (also referred to as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter furthermore said that Yarmouth must be "a free borough forever". Some fifty years or so later Yarmouth was authorized to build a town wall by Henry III, it was also empowered to build a prison or gaol, a good deal of both the walls and the prison still remain in the town today. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and shipbuilding centre during the 13th and 14th centuries, while some conflict occured involving the men of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with many boats destroyed along the way. In 1348 the Black Death arrived in Yarmouth, and hit it in a harder way than it did almost any town in Great Britain, with over three quarters of its residents dying.

Between the river and the wall the houses were packed along over 140 constricted alleys often called 'Rows', some only 3 feet across, a small number of them survive today. An additional legacy from those early periods is the excellent thirteenth century Tolhouse, among England's oldest public buildings, underground it has spooky dungeons. During the medieval period and afterward, the area prospered due to the herring trade. The Free Herring Fair, which was held in the autumn, was without a doubt one of the greatest of the trade fairs in those historical days.

The halcyon days of the herring industry occured just before World War One when over 1,000 herring fishing boats worked out of the port. A band of girls (described as "fish girls") mainly from Scotland arrived in the town every autumn working to process the huge amounts of fish, thought to average in excess of 500 million fish over the best years.
