The renowned British holiday town of Great Yarmouth sits where the River Yare enters the sea (clearly from where it got its name), it has a populace of around 70,234 people, it separates the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for hundreds of years and in recent years it has helped support the numerous offshore oil rigs that are situated off this seacoast. Yarmouth has been a popular coastal hotspot ever since seventeen fifty nine when salt water baths became available at the beachfront.

GreatYarmouth has accomplished a relaxed coexistence between its seafront, that runs for roughly six kilometres, and its busy commercial harbour, which extends along the bank of the River Yare for further than 3km, more or less parallel to the shore. The River Yare runs through the low-lying land to the east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, then stretches out into the expanse of Breydon Water, after which it heads sharply southwards, resulting in the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old town and port grew on the eastern banks of the River Yare, it later continued to expand over the western bank into a district a little bewilderingly referred to as Southtown. Going back to the shoreline, the town boasts 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the renowned Britannia Theatre and a fairground, amusements, restaurants and bowling alley. On Marine Parade is the now run down Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, many are praying that this icon will get the six million or so that will be necessary repair it.

Great Yarmouth's History: There was clearly human settlement in the Great Yarmouth region as far back as Roman times, with the Gariannonum fortress erected by the Romans near the spot that the River Yare flows into the sea. There was clearly a proper community in Yarmouth when the 1086 Domesday Book was compiled. The village in all likelihood grew due to the superb fishing there and a considerable amount of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the total population back then was around four hundred, all at that time in the manor of Gorleston.

King John it was who first awarded Yarmouth the charter to have a market (otherwise known as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter at the same time declared that it must be "a free borough forever". 50 years or so after Yarmouth was given leave to construct a town wall by Henry the 3rd, it was in addition allowed to build a prison, a great deal of both the prison and the walls exist today. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and shipbuilding centre throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, although plenty of combat occured between the men of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a number of ships lost during these conflicts. In thirteen forty eight the Black Death reached the town, and struck it in a more damaging way than it did almost any other community in Britain, with close to seventy percent of the residents wiped out.

Between the river and the walls the buildings tended to be jumbled along over one hundred narrow passageways referred to as 'Rows', some a mere 1 yard wide, a small number of of these passages survive today. An additional leftover from those early periods is the fantastic thirteenth century Tolhouse, certainly one of the country's oldest municipal buildings, below ground level it houses forbidding dungeons. In the Middle Ages and afterward, Great Yarmouth grew rich through the herring trade. The Free Herring Fair, which took place every autumn, was among the best of the trade fairs in the Middle Ages.

The halcyon days for the herring trade happened right before WW1 at which time over 1,100 herring drifters operated out of the town. A group of girls (named "fish girls") the majority from Scotland went to Great Yarmouth every autumn to help process the huge quantities of fish, believed to average in excess of five hundred million fish during the glory years.
