The favourite UK seaside resort of Great Yarmouth sits where the River Yare enters the North Sea (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of roughly 70,000 inhabitants, it divides the Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for many years and lately it has helped support the many offshore oil rigs that exist off this seacoast. It has been fashionable as a coastal hotspot ever since the 1760s when salt water baths were built close to the beach.

The resort has reached a peaceful coexistence between its open seafront, that runs for nearly 6km, and its lively commercial harbor, which runs along the bank of the River Yare over three kilometers, more or less parallel to the shore. The River Yare runs through the low-lying land east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and widens out into the the substantial Breydon Water, after which it moves sharply south, forming a peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth stands.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original settlement and dock developed on the east bank of the Yare, it subsequently extended down the west banks into an area a little bafflingly called Southtown. Returning to the coast, the town boasts two piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the celebrated Britannia Theatre as well as a fairground, amusements, bowling and taverns. Upon Marine Parade you may spot the now run down Winter Gardens, built in steel and glass, many are hoping that this structure will get the six million or so necessary to remodel it.

A History of Great Yarmouth Norfolk: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth area as far back as Roman times, with the Gariannonum fort camp built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. Clearly there was a proper village there by the time of the Domesday Book (1086). The community undoubtedly developed because of the superb fishing here and a large amount of fishermen were certainly among those listed in the Domesday Book, the population back then was approximately four hundred, all in the manor of Gorleston.

It was King John who 1st granted Yarmouth the charter to have a market (also called the right of toll) in 1208, the charter also said that it will be "a free borough forever". About 53 years after this Yarmouth was permitted to erect a town wall by King Henry the 3rd, it was furthermore entitled to have its very own prison or gaol, parts of both the gaol and the walls still remain in Great Yarmouth today. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and harbour throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, although a certain amount of fighting occured between the fishermen of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with a lot of ships lost along the way. In 1348 the Black Death hit Yarmouth, and hit it in a nastier way than it did virtually any town in Britain, with about 70% of the residents perishing.

In between the wall and the river the structures were jumbled together along more than one hundred narrow passages termed 'Rows', a few just 1 yard in width, a number of can still be seen nowadays. One more leftover from those long past times is the superb thirteenth century Tolhouse, one of Britain's eldest municipal structures, underground it houses eerie dungeons. In the medieval period and after, the area grew in prosperity through the herring industry. The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, which was celebrated at autumn time, was one of the greatest of the trade fairs in the Middle Ages.

The heyday for the herring trade occurred prior to World War One at which time more than one thousand one hundred herring fishing boats worked out of the harbour. A group of girls (known as "fish girls") mainly from Scotland headed to Great Yarmouth each autumn time in order to process the enormous volumes of fish, believed to have averaged over 500 million fish in the glory years. The herring were labeled as "silver darlings" locally such was the respect for the fish.
