The well loved UK coastal town of Great Yarmouth is situated at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of about 70,234 residents, it divides the Norfolk Broads and the coast. A fishing port for many years and just recently it has served the a large number of offshore rigs that can be found in the area. It has been prominent as a seaside vacation resort since back in seventeen fifty nine when sea water baths became available at the beachfront.

The resort has achieved a relaxed coexistence between its seafront, that stretches for almost six kilometres, and its lively commercial harbor, which runs alongside the River Yare over two miles, almost parallel to the beachfront. The River Yare meanders through the low-lying ground to the east of the city of Norwich, and increases out into the the much wider Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly southwards, generating the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth is stationed.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original town and dock grew up down the east bank of the River Yare, it later expanded over the western banks into a district rather bewilderingly referred to as Southtown. Returning to the coast, Great Yarmouth boasts 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the celebrated Britannia Theatre and also a funfair, amusement arcades, taverns and bowling alley. Upon Marine Parade is the now unused Winter Gardens, built of glass and steel, residents are praying that this icon will get the 6 million or so required to restore it.

Great Yarmouth's Historic Past: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth area as long ago as the Roman era, with the Gariannonum fort erected by the Romans near the spot that the River Yare flows into the North Sea. There was an established village there when the 1086 Domesday Book was compiled. The community in all likelihood grew because of the terrific fishing there and a sizeable amount of fishermen were certainly amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the population back then was roughly four hundred, all at that time in the manor of Gorleston.

King John it was who first granted Yarmouth a charter to have a market (referred to as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter besides that declared that the town will be "a free borough forever". Some fifty years or so after this Yarmouth was given authorization to construct town walls by Henry the Third, it was furthermore able to build a prison or gaol, sections of both the gaol and the wall still remain in the town today. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and shipbuilding centre through the 13th and 14th centuries, though a certain amount of fighting took place between the ships of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with numerous boats lost along the way. In the late 1340s the Black Death reached the town, and hit it in a more destructive way than it did almost any other town or city in England, with over 70% of its people dying.

In between the town walls and the river the buildings became jumbled together along over one hundred and forty constricted alleys referred to as 'Rows', some as narrow as just 1 yard wide, a few of them survive nowadays. A further legacy from those ancient periods is the splendid thirteenth century Tolhouse, considered to be one of England's oldest municipal buildings, underground it has forbidding dungeons. Through the Dark Ages and after, Yarmouth became rich as a result of herring fishing trade. The Yarmouth Free Herring Fair, which was celebrated each autumn, was undoubtedly one of the best of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The glory days for the herring industry was right before The First World War when above 1 thousand one hundred herring fishing boats operated out of Great Yarmouth. A team of women (termed "fish girls") the majority from Scotland alighted in Yarmouth each autumn to help process the huge amounts of herrings, said to average more than five hundred million fish in the best years. The herring were called "silver darlings" by local residents such was their regard for the fish.
