The favourite UK coast resort of Great Yarmouth lies where the River Yare enters the North Sea (hence its name), it has a population of approximately 70,000 inhabitants, and segregates the Broads and the coast. A fishing port for 100's of years and in recent years it has served the a large number of offshore rigs that can be found in the area. Great Yarmouth has been fashionable as a coastal vacation resort since back in seventeen fifty nine when seawater baths were built next to the seafront.

The town has achieved a peaceful coexistence between its spacious seafront, which runs for almost 6 km, and its lively commercial harbor, which extends along the River Yare for more than two miles, virtually parallel to the shore. The River Yare runs over the low-lying fields to the east of the city of Norwich, after which it increases out into the the huge Breydon Water, after which it curves quickly in a southerly direction, generating the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth is found.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original community and port developed along the east banks of the Yare, it after that extended along the west banks into an area that is bafflingly known as Southtown. Going back to the coast, the town boasts 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the celebrated Britannia Theatre along with a funfair, amusement arcades, tenpin bowling and taverns. On Marine Parade you might spot the now run down Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, local people are hoping that this structure will get the six million or so necessary to remodel it.

Great Yarmouth's Historic Past: There was human activity in the Yarmouth area as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fort erected by the Romans near the spot that the Yare flows into the North Sea. There was a permanent settlement there at the time the Domesday Book was compiled. The community in all probability evolved as a consequence of the exceptional fishing here and a sizeable number of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the total population back then was roughly 400, all at that time in the manor of Gorleston.

It was King John who first granted Yarmouth the charter to have a street market (often known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter in addition announced that the town will be "a free borough forever". About 50 years later the town was given leave to erect a town wall by King Henry the Third, it was in addition entitled to build its own gaol, a great deal of both the prison and the wall still survive at this time. Yarmouth grew as a fishing town and port through the 13th and 14th centuries, whilst plenty of conflict took place between the men of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a number of boats being lost in the conflict. In the late 1340s the Black Death reached Yarmouth, and hit it in a harsher way than virtually any community in Great Britain, with around 70% of its people exterminated.

In between the walls and the river the houses were actually packed together into in excess of a hundred constricted alleyways referred to as 'Rows', some less than one yard wide, several still exist today. Yet another legacy from those long past periods is the amazing thirteenth century Tolhouse, one of the nation's most ancient public buildings, below ground level you will find scary dungeons. In the medieval period and thereafter, Yarmouth (Great Yarmouth) grew in prosperity predominantly from the herring trade. The Free Herring Fair, that was held each autumn time, was actually one of the best of the trade fairs in medieval times.

The peak period for the herring industry was right before World War One when over one thousand herring drifters worked out of the town. A crowd of girls (named "fish girls") the majority from Scotland headed to the port every autumn working to process the massive numbers of herring, believed to have averaged over 500 million fish over the best years.
