The famous UK coast town of Great Yarmouth sits at the mouth of the River Yare (hence the name), it has a population of approximately 70,000 residents, and acts as a gateway between the Norfolk Broads and the sea. A fishing port for generations and just lately it has served the a large number of offshore oil rigs that exist off this coast. It has been a well loved coastal holiday resort since the late eighteenth century when seawater baths became available close to the beach.

The town has realized a comfortable rapport between its seafront, that runs for roughly six kilometres, and its bustling commercial harbor, which runs along the bank of the River Yare over 3 km, pretty much along the same line as the beachfront. The River Yare meanders through the flat low-lying fields east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and broadens out into the the substantial Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly in a southerly direction, generating the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth stands.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old town and port grew up down the east bank of the River Yare, it subsequently extended down the west bank into a district a touch bafflingly termed Southtown. Returning to the seashore, Great Yarmouth boasts 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the famed Britannia Theatre along with a funfair, bars, bowling and amusement arcades. On Marine Parade you will find the now unused Winter Gardens, built in glass and steel, many are hoping that this structure will get the six million or so necessary to repair it.

The History of Great Yarmouth: There was certainly human activity in the Great Yarmouth area as far back as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortress constructed by the Romans near the spot that the River Yare flows into the sea. Clearly there was a permanent village there by the time of the Domesday Book (1086). The community most certainly developed as a result of the exceptional fishing there and a large number of fishermen were amongst those reported in the Domesday Book, the population at this time was approximately four hundred, all then within the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who first issued Yarmouth the charter to have a market (generally known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter on top of that declared that it should be "a free borough forever". About 53 years after this the town was allowed to erect town walls by Henry the 3rd, it was moreover able to have its own gaol or prison, some of both the wall and the gaol remain in modern day Great Yarmouth. Yarmouth grew as a fishing town and port over the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, while some conflict occured between the ships of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with lots of boats being lost during these conflicts. In the 1340s the Black Death struck Yarmouth, and struck it in a harsher way than it did virtually any other community in Britain, with close to 70% of its people dead as a result.

Between the wall and the river the buildings were actually packed together into more than a hundred narrow passageways that were known as 'Rows', some just three feet wide, quite a few remain in existence today. One other legacy from those long past times is the eye-catching 13th century Tolhouse, certainly one of the country's most ancient municipal structures, underground it has forbidding dungeons. Throughout the medieval period and thereafter, the area grew in prosperity principally from the fishing industry. The Free Herring Fair, that happened each autumn, was one of the greatest of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The peak period for the herring industry occured right before World War One when over a thousand herring boats operated out of the harbour. A large number of girls (referred to as "fish girls") many from Scotland arrived in Yarmouth every autumn working to process the enormous amounts of fish, believed to have averaged in excess of five hundred million fish over the prime years.
