A fishing port for generations and in recent times it has helped support the various offshore oil rigs that can be found in the area. Great Yarmouth has been popular as a coastal hotspot since the late 1750s when sea water baths were built on the beachfront.

The resort has attained a peaceful liaison between its seafront, which runs for about 6km, and its vibrant commercial harbor, which stretches alongside the River Yare for more than three kilometers, virtually parallel to the shore. The River Yare runs over the flat low-lying land east of Norwich, and then increases out into the the huge Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly in a southerly direction, producing a peninsula on which Great Yarmouth stands.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old town and harbour developed on the eastern banks of the river, it later expanded across the western banks into a district that is bewilderingly termed Southtown. Returning to the coast, the town boasts 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier features the famed Britannia Theatre plus a fairground, bars, bowling alley and amusement arcades. Upon Marine Parade is the now unused Winter Gardens, built in steel and glass, many are hoping that this building will receive the 6 million or so necessary to repair it.

The History of Great Yarmouth: There was human settlement in the Great Yarmouth area as long ago as the Roman era, with the Gariannonum fort erected by the Romans close to where the Yare flows into the sea. There existed a permanent settlement there by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. The community likely evolved due to the superb fishing there and a large number of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the total population at that time was approximately four hundred, all within the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st issued Yarmouth the charter to have a market (best known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter besides that proclaimed that it will be "a free borough forever". Fifty three years after this the town was permitted to build a town wall by King Henry the 3rd, it was moreover entitled to construct a gaol or prison, sections of both the gaol and the walls survive in modern day Great Yarmouth. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and shipbuilding centre during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, while much combat occured amongst the ships of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with lots of boats destroyed during these conflicts. In thirteen forty eight the Black Death struck Yarmouth, and struck it in a more destructive way than it did almost any settlement the country, with roughly 70% of the townspeople wiped out.

In between the river and the town wall the structures became squashed along over a hundred constricted alleyways typically called 'Rows', a few as narrow as just 1 yard wide, quite a few of these can still be seen to this day. One additional survivor from those historical days is the striking 13th C Tolhouse, considered to be one of the nation's most ancient municipal structures, below ground level it boasts menacing dungeons. During the medieval period and after, Yarmouth prospered due to the herring fishing industry. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, which occurred each autumn time, was one of the best of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The peak period for the herring industry was just before World War One when more than one thousand herring fishing boats worked out of the port. A band of girls (referred to as "fish girls") mostly from Scotland went to Yarmouth every autumn time working to process the enormous volumes of herring, believed to average in excess of 500 million fish in the glory years.
