The popular British sea side town of Great Yarmouth is found where the River Yare enters the North Sea (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of roughly seventy thousand inhabitants, and it is located between the Broads and the coast. A fishing port for many years and recently it has helped support the a large number of offshore rigs that are located off this seacoast. Yarmouth has been a much loved seaside vacation resort ever since 1759 when saltwater baths opened up near to the beachfront.

The town has achieved a comfortable rapport between its seafront, that runs for nearly six kilometres, and its lively commercial harbour, which runs along the River Yare for more than 3 kilometers, more or less along the same line as the coast. The River Yare runs through the flat ground east of Norwich, after which it swells out into the the extensive Breydon Water, and then turns sharply in a southerly direction, producing the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth stands.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The original settlement and port grew down the eastern bank of the Yare, it after that extended across the west bank into a vicinity a touch bewilderingly known as Southtown. Returning to the seashore, Great Yarmouth has 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the well known Britannia Theatre and also a funfair, taverns, amusement arcades and tenpin bowling. On Marine Parade is the now run down Winter Gardens, built in steel and glass, many are praying that this building will get the six million or so that will be necessary restore it.

History of Great Yarmouth: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth area as far back as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fort camp constructed by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There was clearly a permanent village there by the time of the Domesday Book (1086). The community surely evolved due to the superb fishing there and a appreciable amount of fishermen were among those documented in the Domesday Book, the population back then was around 400, all then within the Gorleston manor.

King John it was who first granted Yarmouth the charter to hold a street market (often called the right of toll) in 1208, this charter in addition announced that Yarmouth would be "a free borough forever". About 53 years after this the town was given permission to build town walls by Henry III, it was moreover permitted to build its own prison, plenty of both the walls and the gaol still remain in Great Yarmouth today. Yarmouth grew as a shipbuilding centre and fishing port throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, however a certain amount of conflict occured amongst the fishermen of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with many ships destroyed along the way. In thirteen forty eight the Black Death reached Yarmouth, and hit it in a more damaging way than virtually any city or town in Britain, with roughly 70% of its population annihilated.

Between the town walls and the river the houses were actually squeezed together into over 100 narrow streets labeled as 'Rows', some not even three feet wide, a small number of these alleys remain in existence today. One more survivor from those historic times is the marvelous thirteenth century Tolhouse, among the nation's oldest public buildings, below ground level it houses dark dungeons. Throughout the Middle Ages and thereafter, the port became wealthy due to the herring industry. The Free Herring Fair, which happened every autumn, was one of the greatest of the trade fairs in those historic times.

The heyday for the herring industry was to arrive prior to WW1 at which time more than 1,000 herring fishing boats worked out of Yarmouth. A large number of girls (called "fish girls") lots from Scotland alighted in Yarmouth in autumn time to help process the massive numbers of herring, reputed to average more than five hundred million fish over the best years. The herring were referred to as "silver darlings" locally such was their affection for the fish.
