The favourite UK holiday town of Great Yarmouth is based where the River Yare enters the sea (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of roughly seventy thousand people, and it acts as a gateway between the Norfolk Broads and the sea. A fishing port for centuries and as of late it has served the a large number of offshore rigs that are positioned off this shoreline. It has been renowned as a seaside hotspot ever since 1759 when seawater baths opened up near the seafront.

GreatYarmouth has reached a good relationship between its seafront, that runs for around 6 km, and its bustling commercial harbour, which runs along the River Yare for further than 3 kilometres, pretty much parallel to the coast. The River Yare meanders through the low-lying fields east of the city of Norwich, and then broadens out into the massive Breydon Water, and then turns sharply in a southerly direction, making a peninsula on which Great Yarmouth lies.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original community and harbour evolved on the eastern banks of the River Yare, it subsequently continued to expand over the west banks into a district that is puzzlingly referred to as Southtown. Going back to the seashore, Great Yarmouth has two piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the renowned Britannia Theatre and a fair, tenpin bowling, restaurants and amusement arcades. On Marine Parade is the now run down Winter Gardens, built of steel and glass, local people are praying that this structure will get the 6 million or so required to remodel it.

Great Yarmouth's History: There was human activity in the Great Yarmouth region as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortification built by the Romans close to the location where the Yare flows into the sea. There was clearly a proper village in Yarmouth at the time the Domesday Book of 1086 was compiled. The community in all probability evolved due to the terrific fishing there and a significant amount of fishermen were amongst those outlined in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants back then was approximately four hundred, all at that time in the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st awarded Yarmouth a charter to have a market (described as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter moreover declared that Yarmouth would be "a free borough forever". Half a century later the town was permitted to construct town walls by Henry the Third, it was in addition permitted to have a prison or gaol, some of both the wall and the prison still endure today. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and harbour through the 13th and 14th centuries, although plenty of combat took place involving the sailors of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a lot of ships being sunk in the conflict. In 1348 the Black Death hit Yarmouth, and hit it in a nastier way than it did nearly any city or town in England, with about 70% of the population wiped out.

Between the town wall and the river the houses tended to be compressed into more than one hundred and forty constricted alleyways often known as 'Rows', several less than 3 feet across, a number of these remain in existence to this day. An additional survivor from those early days is the splendid 13th C Tolhouse, certainly one of the nation's eldest public structures, below ground level there are menacing dungeons. In the Dark Ages and thereafter, the town grew rich largely from the herring trade. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, which occurred in the autumn, was one of the greatest of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The heyday for the herring industry was prior to WW1 at which time above eleven hundred herring fishing boats operated out of the port. A team of women (known as "fish girls") many from Scotland travelled to Great Yarmouth every autumn time in order to process the massive quantities of fish, said to average over 500 million fish in the best years.

The town can be reached using the A12 and the A47, it's around 34 kilometres east of Norwich, sixteen kilometers north of Lowestoft and 219 kilometers to the north-east of London. Yarmouth can be arrived at by train from Liverpool St, London and the handiest airport terminal is at Norwich a distance of thirty seven kilometres.
