The ever popular British sea side town of Great Yarmouth sits where the River Yare enters the sea (hence its name), it has a population of roughly seventy thousand residents, it separates the Norfolk Broads and the sea. A fishing port for hundreds of years and recently it has helped support the numerous offshore rigs that exist off this coast. It has been famous as a coastal vacation resort since 1759 when sea baths were built beside the seafront.

GreatYarmouth has achieved a peaceful relationship between its seafront, which runs for nearly six kilometres, and its busy commercial port, which runs alongside the River Yare over 3 km, essentially parallel to the seashore. The River Yare meanders over the flat land east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and then increases out into the the substantial Breydon Water, then turning rapidly in a southerly direction, creating the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth is located.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The old town and harbour grew up on the eastern banks of the river, it next continued to expand down the west banks into an area rather bafflingly known as Southtown. Returning to the seashore, the town boasts 2 piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier houses the celebrated Britannia Theatre as well as a fair, taverns, amusement arcades and bowling. Upon Marine Parade is the now run down Winter Gardens, built of glass and steel, residents are hoping that this building will get the six million or so that will be needed repair it.

Great Yarmouth's Historical Background: There was settlement in the Yarmouth region as early as the Roman era, with the Gariannonum fortress constructed by the Romans near the location where the River Yare flows into the North Sea. There was clearly an established community there by the time of the Domesday Book. The community in all probability grew because of the superb fishing here and a sizeable amount of fishermen were certainly amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the population back then was around 400, all then in the manor of Gorleston.

It was King John who first issued Yarmouth a charter to have a weekly market (generally known as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter at the same time said that it should be "a free borough forever". Half a century after the town was authorized to build town walls by Henry the Third, it was furthermore able to construct its own gaol, a fair amount of both the gaol and the wall still remain in Great Yarmouth today. Yarmouth grew as a harbour and fishing port during the 13th and 14th centuries, though plenty of conflict occured involving the men of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with a considerable number of ships destroyed in the conflict. In the late 1340s the Black Death found its way to Yarmouth, and struck it in a more severe way than it did virtually any other town in Britain, with over 70% of the people wiped out.

In between the wall and the river the structures became squashed together into over one hundred and forty narrow lanes termed 'Rows', a few only 3 feet across, a handful of of them remain in existence today. Another survivor from those historical times is the amazing 13th century Tolhouse, claimed to be one of Britain's most ancient public structures, underground it has scary dungeons. Throughout the Dark Ages and thereafter, the town grew rich as a result of herring fishing trade. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, that happened in the autumn, was one of the biggest of the trade fairs in medieval times.

The halcyon days of the herring trade was to arrive prior to World War 1 at which time above a thousand herring drifters operated out of Yarmouth. A team of women (known as "fish girls") many from Scotland arrived in the port each autumn time in order to process the endless numbers of fish, thought to average more than five hundred million fish over the best years. The herring were known as "silver darlings" by the locals such was the regard for the fish.
