The well loved Norfolk vacation resort of Great Yarmouth sits where the River Yare enters the sea (hence its name), it has a population of roughly 70,234 residents, it sits between the Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for centuries and in recent times it has helped support the numerous offshore rigs that are situated off this shoreline. Yarmouth has been popular as a seaside hotspot since back in the late 18th century when sea baths were built next to the beachfront.

The town has achieved a relaxed coexistence between its seafront, which runs for approximately 6km, and its bustling commercial harbor, which extends along the River Yare for more than 3km, essentially parallel to the beachfront. The River Yare passes over the flat low-lying ground to the east of Norfolk's capital Norwich, and then stretches out into the expanse of Breydon Water, after which it moves quickly in a southerly direction, making the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - - 803908The old community and port evolved down the eastern bank of the Yare, it subsequently expanded across the west bank into an area which is bafflingly termed Southtown. Returning to the shoreline, the town has two piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the famed Britannia Theatre together with a fair, pubs, amusement arcades and bowling alley. On Marine Parade you will find the now run down Winter Gardens, built of glass and steel, locals are hoping that this building will receive the six million or so required to restore it.

Historical Background of Great Yarmouth: There was clearly human settlement in the Yarmouth area as far back as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortress built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There existed an established village in Yarmouth by the time of the 1086 Domesday Book. The settlement in all likelihood grew due to the terrific fishing there and a significant number of fishermen were certainly amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, the population back then was close to four hundred, all belonging to the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st awarded Yarmouth a charter to have a street market (often known as the right of toll) in 1208, this charter besides that proclaimed that Yarmouth would be "a free borough forever". Fifty three years after the town was permitted to build town walls by Henry 3rd, it was likewise able to have its own prison, plenty of both the wall and the gaol endure today. Yarmouth grew as a shipbuilding centre and fishing port over the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, whilst some conflict occured between the fishermen of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with numerous ships being sunk along the way. In 1348 the Black Death struck the town, and struck it in a more destructive way than literally any community in England, with close to seventy percent of the population exterminated.

Between the town walls and the river the structures became packed along over one hundred and forty narrow alleyways also known as 'Rows', a few only one yard wide, quite a few of these alleyways still exist today. One more survivor from those medieval years is the excellent thirteenth century Tolhouse, considered to be one of England's earliest public structures, underground there are forbidding dungeons. Over the Dark Ages and afterward, the town grew rich as a result of herring trade. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, that was celebrated every autumn time, was viewed as one of the greatest of the trade fairs in medieval times.

The halcyon days of the herring industry happened right before The First World War at which time above one thousand one hundred herring boats operated out of Great Yarmouth. A mass of girls (described as "fish girls") mostly from Scotland alighted in Yarmouth each autumn to help process the endless volumes of herrings, thought to have averaged in excess of five hundred million fish in the best years. The herring were known as "silver darlings" locally such was the respect for them.
