The ever popular UK vacation town of Great Yarmouth lies at the mouth of the River Yare (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of around 70,000 residents, and it acts as a gateway between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. A fishing port for 100's of years and as of late it has helped support the a large number of offshore rigs that exist off this coastline. It has been a much visited coastal resort ever since the late eighteenth century when sea baths opened up next to the beach.

GreatYarmouth has reached a good coexistence between its spacious seafront, which runs for roughly 6km, and its busy commercial port, which extends along the bank of the River Yare for further than two miles, pretty much along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare meanders over the low-lying fields to the east of the city of Norwich, and increases out into the massive Breydon Water, then turning quickly southwards, generating the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth is based.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The original community and harbour grew down the east bank of the Yare, it consequently continued to expand across the western bank into an area which is confusingly called Southtown. Going back to the seashore, the town boasts two piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier is home to the well known Britannia Theatre plus a fairground, bowling, amusement arcades and pubs. Upon Marine Parade you will find the now run down Winter Gardens, built in glass and steel, residents are hoping that this icon will get the 6 million or so needed to remodel it.

Great Yarmouth's Historical Background: There was undoubtedly human activity in the Great Yarmouth region as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortification built by the Romans at the mouth of the Yare. There was clearly a well established village in Yarmouth at the time the Domesday Book (1086) was compiled. The settlement certainly developed as a result of the fine fishing here and a appreciable number of fishermen were certainly amongst those outlined in the Domesday Book, the total population at this time was close to four hundred, all then belonging to the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who 1st issued Yarmouth a charter to have a street market (often known as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter moreover stated that it will be "a free borough forever". 50 years or so after the town was given consent to build a town wall by King Henry the 3rd, it was furthermore permitted to construct a prison or gaol, much of both the wall and the gaol still survive at present. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and shipbuilding centre during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, although some conflict occured between the men of the Cinque Ports and those of Yarmouth, with lots of ships destroyed during these conflicts. In 1348 the Black Death hit the town, and struck it in a more destructive way than it did almost any other city or town in Great Britain, with approximately three quarters of the population perishing.

In between the town wall and the river the houses became jammed along in excess of one hundred and forty narrow alleys described as 'Rows', several only one yard in width, a handful of remain in existence to this day. A further relic from those medieval years is the fantastic thirteenth century Tolhouse, one of England's earliest municipal structures, underground you will find scary dungeons. Through the Dark Ages and afterward, the town prospered from the herring industry. The Free Herring Fair, that took place in the autumn, was one of the biggest of the trade fairs in those historic days.

The peak period for the herring trade was to arrive right before WW1 when more than one thousand one hundred herring drifters worked out of Great Yarmouth. A team of women (referred to as "fish girls") mostly from Scotland went to Great Yarmouth each autumn in order to process the large numbers of fish, reputed to average over 500 million fish over the glory years. The herring were called "silver darlings" locally such was the respect for them.
