The well known UK holiday town of Great Yarmouth lies where the River Yare enters the North Sea (clearly from where it got its name), it has a population of approximately 70,000 people, and it stands between the Norfolk Broads and the sea. A fishing port for centuries and most recently it has helped support the various offshore oil rigs that are positioned off this shoreline. Great Yarmouth has been fashionable as a seaside vacation resort since back in the 1760s when sea water baths became available by the beach.

The town has achieved a good coexistence between its large seafront, that extends for approximately 6 km, and its lively commercial harbor, which runs along the bank of the River Yare for further than 3 km, pretty much along the same line as the coastline. The River Yare runs through the low-lying fields east of Norwich, and stretches out into the the substantial Breydon Water, and then turns rapidly south, producing the peninsula upon which Great Yarmouth sits.

North West Tower and Bure Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 803908The old town and dock evolved down the eastern banks of the river, it next continued to expand over the west banks into a vicinity that is bafflingly named Southtown. Going back to the shoreline, the town boasts 2 piers, Wellington Pier and Britannia Pier, the Britannia Pier hosts the well known Britannia Theatre along with a funfair, amusement arcades, restaurants and bowling. On Marine Parade you will find the now derelict Winter Gardens, built in steel and glass, local people are praying that this icon will get the six million or so needed to remodel it.

Great Yarmouth's Historical Past: There was settlement in the Yarmouth area as early as the Roman era, with the Gariannonum camp constructed by the Romans near where the River Yare flows into the sea. There was clearly an established community in Yarmouth by the time of the Domesday Book. The settlement surely grew due to the terrific fishing there and a substantial number of fishermen were among those referred to in the Domesday Book, the total population back then was about 400, all within the manor of Gorleston.

It was King John who first granted Yarmouth the charter to hold a weekly market (often called the right of toll) in 1208, this charter on top of that said that the town will be "a free borough forever". Fifty three years later the town was allowed to construct a town wall by King Henry 3rd, it was in addition entitled to have its very own gaol, parts of both the wall and the gaol remain in modern day Great Yarmouth. Yarmouth grew as a harbour and fishing port during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, whilst a certain amount of combat took place amongst the sailors of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with numerous ships being sunk at this time. In 1348 the Black Death found its way to Yarmouth, and struck it in a more severe way than it did nearly any other settlement in England, with approximately seventy percent of its population wiped out.

Between the river and the walls the houses were actually packed together along in excess of one hundred constricted alleys described as 'Rows', some less than one yard wide, a handful remain in existence nowadays. Another legacy from those early years is the marvelous thirteenth century Tolhouse, among the nation's oldest municipal structures, below ground level you will find sinister dungeons. Through the Dark Ages and after, Yarmouth (Great Yarmouth) grew in affluence as a result of fishing trade. The Free Herring Fair, which took place each autumn time, was without doubt one of the best of the trade fairs in medieval times.

The best days for the herring fishing occurred prior to World War One when over 1,100 herring boats worked out of the port. A large number of girls (called "fish girls") mostly from Scotland alighted in the town every autumn to help process the large quantities of fish, thought to have averaged more than five hundred million fish over the best years. The herring were identified as "silver darlings" by the locals such was their respect for them.
