The celebrated Norfolk coast resort of Great Yarmouth sits where the River Yare enters the sea (hence the name), it has a populace of around 70,234 people, and it separates the Broads and the coast. A fishing port for 100's of years and over the last few decades it has served the numerous offshore oil rigs that exist off this seacoast. It has been a well loved seaside holiday resort ever since the late eighteenth century when salt water baths were built close to the seafront.

The town has attained a good rapport between its seafront, that extends for about six kilometres, and its busy commercial harbor, which stretches along the bank of the River Yare for further than three kilometres, virtually parallel to the beachfront. The River Yare passes over the flat ground to the east of Norwich, then stretches out into the the huge Breydon Water, then turning rapidly in a southerly direction, making the peninsula on which Great Yarmouth sits.

Going back to the seashore, Great Yarmouth has two piers, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier, the Britannia Pier hosts the famed Britannia Theatre as well as a funfair, bowling, amusement arcades and taverns. On Marine Parade you will find the now run down Winter Gardens, built of glass and steel, residents are praying that this building will receive the six million or so required to remodel it.

The History of Great Yarmouth: There was settlement in the Yarmouth district as early as the Roman period, with the Gariannonum fortification constructed by the Romans near the spot that the River Yare flows into the North Sea. There existed an established settlement in Yarmouth by the time of the 1086 Domesday Book. The community most probably grew because of the excellent fishing here and a large amount of fishermen were amongst those listed in the Domesday Book, number of inhabitants at this time was roughly 400, all in the Gorleston manor.

It was King John who first granted Yarmouth the charter to have a market (best known as the right of toll) in 1208, the charter at the same time said that it will be "a free borough forever". Some fifty years or so after this Yarmouth was allowed to construct a town wall by Henry III, it was additionally allowed to have its very own prison or gaol, a lot of both the prison and the walls still exist at this time. Yarmouth grew as a fishing port and harbour throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, although some combat occured between the ships of Yarmouth and those of the Cinque Ports, with numerous ships destroyed during these conflicts. In the late 1340s the Black Death hit the town, and hit it in a more extreme way than it did almost any settlement in England, with over three quarters of its residents killed.

Between the river and the wall the houses were jumbled along over one hundred and forty constricted alleyways often known as 'Rows', some not even three feet across, a number of still exist nowadays. An additional relic from those long past years is the outstanding 13th century Tolhouse, considered to be one of Britain's eldest municipal structures, below ground level it has menacing dungeons. Over the Dark Ages and thereafter, the town prospered through the herring trade. Yarmouth's Free Herring Fair, which was celebrated in the autumn, was one of the best of the trade fairs in those far off times.

The heyday for the herring fishing was right before World War One when over 1,000 herring fishing boats worked out of Yarmouth. A band of girls (named "fish girls") many from Scotland headed to the port in autumn to help process the huge volumes of herring, thought to have averaged more than five hundred million fish during the glory years.
